What is Brie en Croûte?

In case you have never seen Brie en Croûte, I thought I should explain a little about what it is.Brie en Croûte is French for Brie cheese wrapped in pastry, usually puff pastry.

Brie is a French cheese made from cow’s milk and is from the region of Brie, France. It’s an incredibly rich and creamy cheese with a hint of a fruity, nutty, and tangy flavor.

This cheese has become extremely popular in recent years, so you should have no problem finding some nice Brie cheese in the gourmet cheese section of your local grocer!

Brie vs. Camembert

You may have seen Camembert sitting beside the Brie in your local grocery store. If you’re not familiar with this type of cheese, it is almost identical to Brie with just a few differences.

While Brie is made in Brie, France, Camembert is traditionally made in Normandy, France, about three hours away.

Camembert and Brie are both soft French cheeses made from cow’s milk, and they look identical.

Their flavors are also similar, and they are typically utilized in the same way.In fact, you can use Camembert in any of these recipes if you’d like to try it.

Their differences are subtle.Brie has added cream, giving it a creamier consistency and higher milk fat percentage.

Brie is also milder with a buttery, creamy flavor, while Camembert has more intense, earthy notes.

However, Brie and Camembert have flavor profiles that are almost identical, and you might have some difficulty telling much difference between them.

The biggest difference between the two cheeses is in size.

A wheel of Brie is very large, between 9 and 14 inches in diameter, while a wheel of Camembert is smaller, only about 5 inches across.

Because of Brie’s size, it is most often sold in pie-shaped slices, whereas Camembert is always sold in whole 8-ounce wheels.

More recently, “Baby Brie” is being sold in 8-ounce wheels, but it should be distinctly labeled.

Can i eat the rind?

Yes!The rind is completely edible and can even add to the flavor, since it often has a pleasant, earthly taste.

You should know that it is considered bad manners to scoop out the inside and leave the rind on the cheeseboard.

Doing so skews the ratio of rind to cheese for anyone who may want to enjoy the cheese after you.If you don’t like the rind, take both elements onto your own plate and separate them there.

FAQs

Should you cut the rind off brie before baking in puff pastry? ›

Brie rind is edible, and it actually adds nuance and complexity of flavor. In this baked brie recipe, I do not remove the rind because I need the surface to spread my jam and to add my beautiful nuts and toppings.

Do you take the top off brie before baking? ›

No, you don't have to remove the rind before baking brie. The rind is edible and I don't even think you can taste it after the brie is baked. If you want to remove the rind, you can use a sharp knife to carefully cut off the thin rind of the cheese at the top of the wheel. This is easier to do when the brie is cold.

How do you eat brie en croute? ›

Brie en Croûte is a festive French appetizer that is simply perfect for entertaining. Made with store-bought puff pastry, it encases a warm and melty whole wheel of brie, that's then topped with honey, cranberries, nuts and thyme. Serve it on a platter with fruits and crackers, and be sure to impress your guests!

Why is my baked brie rubbery? ›

If you left the rind of the cheese on, the baked brie may seem like it is rubbery once heated, or the brie was overcooked by leaving it in the oven too long. To avoid the rubbery texture, remove the rind of the cheese and make sure to not overbake the brie in the oven.

How long do you remove rind from brie before baking? ›

Do you take the rind off before baking? Keep the rind on, as it will help the cheese hold its shape so it doesn't all melt out. The rind is also edible, so you can enjoy it with the melted cheese, or simply remove the top layer after baking and dunk in crusty bread like a fondue.

What is the best way to remove the rind from brie? ›

Stand the brie on its side and use a serrated knife to slice both circular ends off of the brie. Once you've made the cut, use your fingers to pry off the rind. If the brie is sufficiently firm, the top and bottom should be easy to cut off.

Which jam goes with brie? ›

Jam - personally, I love the flavour of brie cheese with fig fruit jam, it goes so well with the savoury and sweet flavours. However, you can use absolutely any jam you like! A few of my favourite varieties include: blackberry, boysenberry, apricot or cherry jam.

What should I serve on top of brie cheese? ›

Jams, Compotes, and Chutneys. Fresh preserves and jams are common toppings for baked brie, as their sweet flavors swirl into the melty cheese making an irresistible (and beautiful!) sweet and savory combination.

Can you eat the stuff on top of brie? ›

Yes, the bloomy rind is completely safe to eat and even keeps the inside safe from any potentially unwanted microorganisms during production.

How do the French eat their brie? ›

If you want to serve cheese as the French do, you should serve it to your dinner guests as an individual course before your dessert. Doing this allows the Brie to have a moment in the spotlight. However, many people also serve Brie as an appetizer with fruit, meat, and crackers.

What is the eating etiquette for brie? ›

To eat Brie, first remove it from your refrigerator and let it rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes. This allows the brie to become softer and more flavorful as it warms. Once softened, simply slice your brie into small wedges, without removing the edible, flavorful rind.

Why does my brie rind taste like ammonia? ›

It may be a turnoff but it's a consequence of aging, especially for bloomy-rind cheeses like Brie. As these cheeses ripen, their surface molds break down protein into amino acids and one byproduct of that breakdown is ammonia. When a Brie is aging at the creamery on a rack, the ammonia is evacuated through ventilation.

Why does my brie rind taste like mushroom? ›

As Brie cheese ages, it develops a stronger flavor and becomes more complex, with earthy and nutty undertones. The rind of Brie has a slightly tangy and mushroom-like flavor that adds to the overall taste experience.

How do you make brie taste better? ›

Best practice: cut the wheel in half, then in small slices. As mentioned, brie's mild, yet buttery and nutty flavor pairs well with so many things. Some examples are salami, prosciutto, pickles, apricots, apples, pears, dates, almonds, candied walnuts, and pecans.

Should you cut rind off brie? ›

The rind protects the cheese on the inside and helps to give the cheese its flavor. You're missing out on a big part of the flavor and textural experience if you do not eat the rind. Of course, you can cut the rind off and just eat the gooey cheese middle if you want. You can eat your food however you choose.

Can you eat the skin on baked brie? ›

The Bottom Line

So, to answer the question, “Can you eat the rind on Brie?” Yes, it is 100% okay to eat the rind on Brie, and is even recommended. If you enjoy the flavor the rind imparts, eat as much as you like! If you're unsure, try it.

How do you cut brie for baked brie? ›

Baked brie is usually eaten by cutting a bit off with a knife and spreading the softened cheese over a cracker. You can make a dip-able baked brie by cutting the top part of the rind off. Leave the sides and bottom of the rind intact; they will hold the cheese together while you bake it.

Can I reheat brie in puff pastry? ›

Yes, you can reheat it! I'm not sure you'll have any leftovers...but, in case, here is what you do. On a low temperature of 200F, place the cold baked brie in the puff pastry on a baking sheet and heat for about 20-30 minutes. You could tent it with foil paper to prevent the crust from browning too much.
