Basically they're paper-piecing templates created specifically for 10″ x 10″ (Layer Cake) precut squares. They come as a note pad of 45 of the same paper-pieced sheet. As I mentioned there are 8 different recipes with a different combination of sizes of half-square triangles and squares.
The box mix is about $1.50 cheaper and requires less effort, energy, and attention. And really, the flavor isn't that bad…just not that remarkable. Homemade cakes can sometimes be fussy, especially if you don't make them very often, but dang!
Most bakeries do NOT bake from scratch. In fact, I once worked at a bakery that actually claimed to be a “scratch bakery”, but all their cakes started with a Duncan Hines cake mix, the same kind you buy in the grocery store.
A layer cake is a bundle of 10 inch precut fabric squares in coordinating quilt fabrics, making it easy to mix and match for your quilt project. Not sure what to make with layer cake fabric? We have hundreds of Layer Cake patterns using 10" square layer cake fabrics.
A standard box of cake mix is usually sufficient to make two layers, which you can stack on top of one another for a single cake. If you frosted them both separately, you'd have two cakes. If you used smaller pans (or cut the layers into pieces), you could get many more.

The largest quilt you can make with one layer cake is a 57″ x 66.5″ quilt. Lay your blocks in a 6×7 grid to get these measurements. Cake mix usually contains more sugar and fat than pancake mix and often includes leavening agents like baking powder or baking soda. On the other hand, pancake mix typically has less sugar and fat and often includes a powdered form of buttermilk or other dairy products.
Usually, there are about four to six cups of cake batter in a boxed cake mix. In addition to that, there are typically four cups of batter in a package of Betty Crocker cake mix. Cake mixes are indeed convenient. Talk about making flavorful and moist desserts with ease.
