I skip a step and don’t use the sugar. Mix the jam into the cream cheese and then just spread once. Faster and not quite so sweet!

I just pull the frozen waffles out of the freezer and assemble them because it is so easy, although I suppose you could freeze them already assembled.

Hmmm. Looks good. I’m thinking savory, though…. Lose the sugar in the cream cheese mix and add in some fire-roasted green chiles. And bacon. Bacon strips would make it perfect.

FAQs

Do grilled cheese sandwiches freeze well? ›

Freezing grilled cheese can extend its shelf-life, but like any food, it'll taste better if you reheat it well before any freezer burn sets in. Bread can stay in the freezer for up to six months before that freezer burn taste sets in, while cheese will keep up to 12 months.

Can you make breakfast sandwiches and freeze them? ›

Put all the sandwiches in a freezer bag or container. Freeze for up to 1 month. Reheating instructions: Unwrap the frozen sandwich and place on a microwave-safe plate lined with a paper towel. (The towel helps absorb some of the melting ice so the bread doesn't get soggy.)

Is it okay to have grilled cheese for breakfast? ›

A breakfast grilled cheese is just as good as it sounds — gooey, melty cheese and fluffy scrambled eggs on golden, buttery toasted bread. And while it couldn't be easier to whip up, there is one factor that's absolutely critical: You need to pick a melty cheese.

How do you make grilled cheese more interesting? ›

What sandwich ingredient should not be frozen? ›

Some ingredients do not freeze well. Hard-cooked egg whites become tough upon freezing. Jelly, jam and honey soak into bread making it soggy. Tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, onions and similar vegetables become limp and watery.

Is it OK to eat grilled cheese everyday? ›

If you're slathering it in butter or mayonnaise – it's probably not a meal you'd want to indulge in daily. If you're grilling it under a broiler or using a sandwich press, it's probably a healthier food choice.

What cheese goes on a breakfast sandwich? ›

As far as breakfast sandwich recipes go, our recipe is particularly easy. You'll need one large egg, some green onions or chives (sliced thinly), salt and ground black pepper, and cheddar cheese—we recommend Cabot Sharp Cheddar, Cabot Extra Sharp Cheddar, or Cabot Lite50 Sharp Cheddar.

What's the difference between grilled cheese and toast? ›

Grilled cheese vs cheese toastie – Fundamentally they are both toasted bread with melted cheese sandwiched between them. But toasties are made using a sandwich press or toastie maker, while grilled cheese is made on the stove in a skillet, griddle or pan.

What else can you add to a grilled cheese? ›

Tuck in a little sautéed spinach, caramelized onions, chopped steamed broccoli, roasted red peppers, or roasted tomatoes. Add fruit. For really gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, use a mix of Gruyere and brie cheese along with thinly sliced apples or a slather of fig jam. Pickles, please!

How do you freeze sandwiches without getting soggy? ›

Keep mayonnaise and dressings to a minimum (it's healthier too). A thin spread of butter creates a barrier that stops sandwiches from going soggy. Wrap snuggly in foil before freezing and label with a permanent marker.

What do you wrap sandwiches in to freeze? ›

To freeze, wrap each sandwich tightly with parchment paper or aluminum foil and place it in a gallon-size freezer bag. Write the date on the bag along with what each sandwich is.
