Jake Moody hits a 27-yarder to put the Niners up 22-19

The 49ers settle for a field goal after a huge red zone stop by the Chiefs on 3rd and 4.

SF fullback Kyle Juszczyk nabbed an iffy catch by the sideline to keep the 49ers seven-minute drive alive. (To us, it looked like a catch and a good call by the refs.)

Chiefs take over. A touchdown (or a turnover) wins the game.

We're headed to OT. Here's how it works

Rebecca Cohen

From our friends at the NBC News blog:

The NFL has its own set of postseason overtime rules, and they were changed recently.NBC Sports breaks downhow it will work.

After a coin toss to determine who takes possession of the ball, each team will get a chance to score. Then, OT turns to sudden death. The next score wins.

During the regular season, at the end of a 10-minute overtime period, if the game is still tied, the game is marked as a tie.

But that can’t happen in the postseason — and definitely not at the Super Bowl.

A tie score at the end of the first overtime period launches a second 10-minute overtime, then a third and so on, until one team comes out on top.

Chiefs K Harrison Butker ties the game, 19-19

Butker hits his fourth FG of the game to tie things up. It's looking like overtime!

Many people hoped Justin Bieber would take the stage during Usher's halftime show for a performance of "Somebody to Love." While the singer was not one of Usher's many guests, he was at Allegiant Stadium in support.

Beyoncé owns her ability to break the internet in Verizon Super Bowl ad

Maddie Ellis

After days of Verizon teasing a Super Bowl ad starring none other than Beyoncé, the commercial aired shortly after halftime.

The singer, starring as herself opposite Tony Hale, tries to "break" Verizon, a riff on how she's known for "breaking the internet," through a series of stunts, starting with one that comes straight from reality — her 2016 album "Lemonade."

She then ups the ante through a "surprise drop," a Beyoncé AI, Barbie and presidency and finally, a performance in space.

"You ain't going to break me," she says in the ad.

At the very end, she's heard saying, "OK, they ready! Drop the new music," appearing to tease a new release. Just minutes later, she took to Instagram to announce a country-themed project, set to drop on March 29.

Beyoncé's last album, "Renaissance," dropped in 2022.

Fans are calling Michael Cera’s CeraVe ad ‘the best Super Bowl commercial in years’

Elena Nicolaou

We now know why Michael Cera wassigning bottles of CeraVeat a New York pharmacy.

The actor’s partnership with the skincare brand was made clear during the Super Bowl, when their collaborative ad aired.

Cera, in the commercial, called CeraVehiscream — or, as he might say it, Cera-ve.

“Oh, you didn’t know?” he said, over a New Age soundtrack. “The truth has been hiding in plain sight. I am CeraVe.”

The commercial was both satirical and dramatic, as Cera was shown giving himself a massage and asking, “Can human skin truly be this moisturized?”

Another memorable one-liner from the ad: “Let my cream hydrate you.” Later on, a dolphin tells Cera his skin looks moisturized; Cera returns the compliment.

The ad then zooms out to show Cerapresentingthis to a board. “I think it would be really nice if people think I made this,” he said.

The ad ended with CeraVe emphasizing it’s made with oversight from dermatologists, not Michael Cera.

Online, people deemed the ad the “best Super Bowl commercialin years.” Fans deemed the partnership between Cera(ve) the cream and Cera the actor “the smartest one in a while.”Others went as far as to call it “genius.”

Why Jason Kelce in Las Vegas is being compared to a character from 'The Hangover'

Gina Vivinetto

Jason Kelce just can’t stop bringing the fun — even if it’s only in a meme.

A tweet alleging that the Philadelphia Eagle center showed up to the2024 Super Bowlin Las Vegas dressed like Zack Galifianakis’s unhinged character Allan in the wild 2008 comedy “The Hangover,” also set in Vegas, went viral on Feb. 11.

The meme, which, to be clear, featured aphotoshoppedimage of the NFL star onto Galifianakis’ body, was created by the folks at Total Sports Pro. It sparked hilarious comments about just how much fun the older Kelce brother is.

“Jason Kelce arriving in Vegas wins everything today,” wrote one fan, who shared the meme along with a photo of Galifianakis.

“They need to cast him in the next “Hangover” movie. He cracks me up!” wrote another.

“The man, the myth, the LEGEND,” joked someone else.

The meme was likely inspired by an NFL broadcaster’s comment comparing Kelce, who is known for his outrageous antics on and off the field, to Galifianakis’ character after Kelceappeared to yell “Eagles!” in excitement during an Adele concertin Las Vegas earlier this week.

Niners QB Brock Purdy has an unusual distinction this year: He's one of only a handful of players dubbed "Mr. Irrelevant" to ever start in a Super Bowl. The nickname is given each year to the player picked last in the NFL draft. Purdy was the 262nd selection in the 2022 draft out of Iowa State, a scrappy, mid-level college program.

Over at NBC News, our colleague David K. Li reports that, coming out of high school, 38 quarterbacks in the country were considered better prospects than Purdy. And tonight, as Purdy and his team take the field in Vegas, many of those ex-blue chip stars are out of football.

Andra Day performs 'Lift Every Voice and Sing.' What to know about the lyrics

Randi Richardson and Maddie Ellis

To kick off the pre-game performances at the Super Bowl, Andra Day performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often thought of as the Black national anthem.

The song was originally written as a poem in 1899 by James Weldon Johnson, the NAACP’s executive secretary for 10 years, per theNAACP.

The poem became a song when Johnson’s brother John Rosamond Johnson composed an instrumental arrangement for it. The song was first performed in 1900 during a celebration of the former president Abraham Lincoln. It was sung by a choir of 500 children at their segregated school in Florida, per the NAACP.

The song held different meanings depending on the tenor of the era. When the song was written at the turn of the century, “Johnson’s lyrics eloquently captured the solemn yet hopeful appeal for the liberty of Black Americans,” as the NAACP puts it.

The song recognizes the Black freedom struggle of overcoming inequality for centuries with the lasting hope of a better future. It became a rallying cry against the realities of lynching, segregation and discrimination at the time, and later used during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

Kylie Kelce has said she'd never wear non-Eagles NFL gear. She's sticking to that at the Super Bowl

Maddie Ellis

As a native Philadelphian, Kylie Kelce has said she'd never wear non-Eagles gear.

“I am likean Eagles fan to the extentof, like, if Jason ever went and played for another team, I would wear ‘Kelce,’ I would not wear another team’s stuff,”she said during the "Kelce" documentary that premiered on Prime Video last fall.

She stayed true to that with her outfit at the Super Bowl.

Kylie, however, did show some special support for her brother-in-law. When, she was spotted chatting with Taylor Swift in the singer's suite, she appeared to have taken off the red Bearcats shirt and tied it around her shoulders.

Underneath, she was wearing a black T-shirt with what seems to be the words "Alright Nah" —Travis Kelce's catchphrase — printed on it.

Fathers & sons: Niners' Christian McCaffrey and Kyle Shanahan are aiming to join exclusive Super Bowl clubs

Super Bowl 2024: Chiefs defeat the 49ers for Taylor Swift's 13th game (38)

Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers' all-pro RB, was just 2 years old when his dad, former Broncos standout Ed McCaffrey, won his third Super Bowl in 1999. A sports photographer's snapshot from that game captured little Christian running through a shower of confetti (above) after his dad's Broncos beat the Falcons, 34-19. The Broncos' coach was Mike Shanahan. His son, Kyle, was there, too.

Ed McCaffrey (alongside his former coach) revisited that moment on TODAY Friday, saying it may have been the spark "where Christian first had the dream of playing in a Super Bowl." Watch the interview here.

If the 49ers win, the McCaffreys would become just the second father-son duo to win a Super Bowl with the same franchise. (Ed won with the Niners in 1995. In all, seven father-son duos have won the Lombardi Trophy as players, according to the NFL.)

Right now, former New York Giants Steve DeOssie and Zak DeOssie are the only ones to do it with the same team. Steve, a linebacker, won one in 1991 (the famed "wide right" game against the Buffalo Bills), and Zak, a long snapper, won two, in 2008 and 2012.

Meanwhile, the Shanahans stand alone as the only father-son duo to lead their teams to a Super Bowl as head coaches. If the Niners win, Kyle will be the only coach to have won an NFL championship after his father did it.

The Chapel of the Flowers in Las Vegas says they will pay Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to get married after the Super Bowl.

CEO Donne Kerestic said the chapel has "an aisle prepared and ready to go" for the couple, who first went public with their relationship in September 2023.

“We’re ready to make the Big Game even bigger for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce with a wedding in one of our famous chapels!" Kerestic said in a statement.

However, a deal extends to anyone named Travis and Taylor. The Chapel of the Flowers will provide a free wedding on Feb. 11 to any couple that shares their names.

The 2024 Super Bowl is a Chiefs-49ers championship rematch. Here's what happened last time

Maddie Ellis

The 49ers are headed into Super Bowl 58 with a score to settle.

San Francisco last went to the Super Bowl in 2020, when they lost to the Chiefs 31-20. While the Chiefs trailed at the start of the fourth quarter, third-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes brought Kansas City its first championship win in more than 50 years.

The Chiefs scored 21 points in the last seven minutes of the game, with Mahomes connecting with Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Damien Williams and Travis Kelce on key plays.

Four years later, Mahomes and the Chiefs are headed into the Feb. 11 game as the reigning Super Bowl champs, seeking to become the first back-to-back winners since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005.

Will Taylor Swift make it to the Super Bowl?

Maddie Ellis

After a whirlwind rookie season as a Chiefs fan, Taylor Swift's new favorite team is headed to the Super Bowl. She became a fixture during the Chiefs' postseason, traveling from Kansas City to Buffalo to Baltimore. But the NFL championship game created a slight schedule conflict.

Swift resumed her "Eras Tour" in Tokyo on Feb. 7 and took the stage for her last Japan show on Feb. 10. (Her world tour resumes on March 4 in Singapore.) Super Bowl 58 is set for Feb. 11 in Las Vegas at 3:30 p.m. PT.

But Swifties and new football fans, never fear. Taking into account her private jet and the time change, Swift can leave Tokyo on Feb. 11 and land in Las Vegas on Feb. 10, with plenty of time to spare before kickoff. Don't just take our word for it. The Embassy of Japan confirmed it, too.

The Chiefs owner's daughter had also told People magazine on Feb. 10 that Swift was en route to Vegas.

And to think —this relationship started with a podcast shoutout, "a friendship bracelet and a dream."
